My England Finds
April 9-April 18, 2011.....My Second Trip
Colchester, England

Hugh de Brandeston
Family Shield
Medieval Heraldic Shield Pendant...13thC

This is my best find on my second trip. 13th Century Medieval Heraldic Shield Pendant with red, green and gold enameling. These shields had different meanings which make for interesting reading. They were generally attached to a horse's harness, bridles & reins.
One of the club members, CaliforniaJim, takes pride in identifying shields that we find. He is our club expert. Below is his research and it shows that my shield belongs to the Hugh de Brandeston family. Thank you Jim for your research.
Hi Rob,
My best guess would be that your shield is that of Hugo de Braundeston, on Collins Roll 10, number 484. Here is the drawing of that shield, by done by that site. (See above)
Or two bars gules overall a bend azure
Hugh de Brandeston

It is my impression that the 'two bars' which should take up 2/5ths of the field, accurately depicts what the shield would have really looked like, and that it is a closer match to your shield. But this is the guy I would go with. California Jim

Early 1900's large copper pennies (Greenies). These are about the size of a U.S. Half Dollar. When we find these they are usually in much worse condition than these. I basically rinsed these off. I may do a better cleaning on these in the future. They are kinda cool.
